The purpose of the Love. Protect. Adopt. Campaign is to showcase people from different lifestyles and backgrounds who all pledge to do their part to love, protect, and adopt animals. We aim to inspire people to take action by volunteering or donating, but overall we want to encourage people to adopt, rather than shop. The galleries, videos, and testimonies are from people who participate and support in the Love.Protect.Adopt. campaign.

The 501st Legion is comprised of a group of volunteers dedicated to re-creating film-quality costumes of the “villainous” characters
of the Star Wars galaxy to contribute to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work. By being “Bad Guys Doing Good”, the
501st Legion is proud to put its resources to good use through fundraising, charity work, and volunteerism.
Some examples of the events the 501st Legion participates in our charity walks, hospital visits and private events making charitable donations.
The Southern California Garrison, a branch of the 501st Legion located in the greater Los Angeles area, was beyond excited to have the opportunity to partner with the Volunteers of the Burbank Animal shelter to highlight some fantastic residents.
Also present was our sister club, The Rebel Legion, to ensure the ‘good guys’ of the galaxy had an opportunity to cuddle the animals.
We hope that the fun pictures taken with our troopers will bring more visibility to how fantastic shelter pets are and bring both sides of the galaxy together to adopt.

Danielle “Dynamite” Taylor

Danielle Taylor is an accomplished mixed martial arts fighter and a Custody Assistant for the LA County Sheriff’s Department with a soft spot for animals.

Danielle “Dynamite” Taylor is currently a contender in the UFC Women’s Strawweight division after successfully holding the Strawweight Title Belt in King of the Cage once in 2015 and again in 2016. Danielle’s fans best know her for her dynamic boxing style and elite grappling capabilities. Danielle’s friends and family know her love of kittens and her Yorkshire Terrirer, Lexie.

Danielle stopped by the Burbank Animal Shelter to promote the VBAS’ Love.Protect.Adopt Campaign because of her beliefs in animal welfare and adoptions. Aside from Danielle’s MMA passions, she deeply believes in the joy kittens can spread with their innocence and all around adorableness. After the shoot Danielle spent time socializing the cats with volunteers. We couldn’t be more grateful for her time and effort!

Earlier this year in an animal shelter not so far away…

It is a period of great need for homeless animals. The Rebel Legion, some striking from the Sunrider Base and the 501st, have won their first victory in bringing awareness to the Love.Protect.Adopt. Campaign. During the effort, VBAS volunteers and CTE students from the tri-city area were enamored by the Rebels as they comforted the shelter animals, taught them tricks, and told them of the perils of the dark side. However, the Evil Galactic Empire made a great showing and began to recruit impressionable puppies and kittens. Darth Vader and the Storm Troopers took a particular liking to the shelter kittens.

The Rebels invite you to take a look at the full collection of photos as they have dedicated their lives to using the force for good, bringing attention to worthy causes across the galaxy. For more about the Rebel Legion Sunrider Base visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SunriderBase/.

Special thanks to Lisa Curtis Saunders and Chris de Zorzi for making this visit possible!

You’d think this actress, model, and Gamebreaker.tv host would want everything with a designer name, but Kat Andrusco stopped by the Burbank Animal Shelter to promote adoptions over what she calls “designer” animals. Kat says “it makes me so sad to think that people are more interested in designer animals as some sort of status symbol, as opposed to finding a friend and new family member that is just waiting to be found at the shelter.” We couldn’t agree with Kat more! Kat has wonderful role models in her parents, sister, and brother-in-law who have a combined total of 7 rescue cats in their respective households. To learn more about Kat visit her social media accounts and her IMDB page.

Bruno O’Hara has worked in film and television since 1997, then became a professional photographer in 2007. In between all of his projects, Bruno donates his skills to the residents of the Burbank Animal Shelter because he believes animals in shelters “are survivors beyond our understanding; they need and deserved love…now.”

Bruno notes that his style is “Just Be; nothing contrived because he believes “people need to see how beautiful they truly are”; bringing that style to our Happy Tails Hikes and around the shelter has definitely produced some wonderful shots. For more photos, or to have Bruno shoot your event visit http://brunoohara.com/.

Representatives from the World Dodgeball Society came down to the Burbank Animal Shelter to exercise some of the shelter pups and cuddle the kittens. This group was on their way to the LA: Poinsettia Open Gym, which happens almost every Sunday from 12pm-2pm at the Poinsettia Recreation Center, but wanted to donate their time to the Love.Protect.Adopt Campaign before enjoying an afternoon of fun! We want to extend our thanks to those who stopped by and provided our pups with some exercise and our kittens with some love! Check out this phenomenal group of people here: http://dodgeball4ever.com/.

This month we’re featuring our VBAS Volunteers! These are the people who donate their free time to help bring awareness to animal welfare and homelessness by supporting the Burbank Animal Shelter and surrounding communities. Our volunteers contribute in so many ways, from walking dogs in Stough Canyon; fostering kittens through the Kitten Foster Program; tending to sick animals in the Medical program, to planning events for fundraising, and creating campaigns to promote the shelter and animal adoptions throughout Southern California. We want to feature the hardworking men and women of the VBAS this September and we look forward to recruiting and training many more VBASers in the future!

Luke Massy stopped by the Burbank Animal Shelter in between filming! Aside from being an accomplished and internationally recognized actor, Luke donates his time and talent to helping animals in need:

“Please give a caring home for one, two or three of the beautiful loving dogs, cats or rabbits from the Burbank Animal Shelter. Being homeless as a youth on the streets of London, I know how important it is to be given a chance and to have a safe place you can call home. I can assure you that in return you will have the most unconditional love from a very grateful four legged friend. If you have some love to share take a visit to the Burbank Animal Shelter, let your heart lead you and and your new pet will find you.”

Kitten Foster Program

Actively recruiting Foster Parents for 2017

The VBAS Kitten Foster Program was established in 2001 in response to the overwhelming homeless kitten population in the Burbank area. Throughout the year, the shelter receives hundreds of kittens less than eight weeks old. Whether they come in as a single stray or an entire litter, these tiny felines are too young to survive in a shelter environment. Foster volunteers house these young kittens and provide essential care – feeding, socialization with humans and other animals and medical care. Once the foster kitten reaches two pounds in weight he or she is available for adoption, and the foster family will interview potential adopters at home or at an adoption fair. Kitten adoption fairs are held twice each month at the shelter to assist with the adoption process.

Medical Program

The VBAS Medical Program started under the direction of volunteer veterinarian, Martin Small, D.V.M. Since its inception, the medical program has evolved to providing vaccinations, examinations and testing for disease for all animals that enter the shelter, ensuring pets are healthy before being adopted. VBAS volunteers assist the medical staff in the clinic, with routine examinations as well as pre- and post-surgery. The VBAS also funds special needs examinations and surgeries for animal residents.

Seniors for Seniors

It’s never too late to find the love of your life!

Senior pets and senior people seem to have a special bond, and matching them provides a wonderful sense of companionship for both. Pets provide special enrichment and documented health benefits to the lives of mature adults. An older pet has a great deal of love and affection still to give. Mature pets are typically more mellow, require only moderate exercise, have already been trained, and fit into the lifestyle of older adults easily. Like senior humans, senior pets enjoy the time to relax and savor the pleasures of life. For these reasons the VBAS has established a Seniors for Seniors discount. Any Southern California resident age 60 and older may adopt a Burbank Animal Shelter “senior” dog or cat age seven or older, and the VBAS will waive 75% of the adoption fee (proof of age and residency is required.)

Come to the shelter and visit our selection of wonderful mature dogs and cats waiting for a new home.
